GrCo school board okays $15 minimum hourly wage for non-teaching staff

Greene County Schools classified employees are all receiving pay increases, some of them as much as $2.50 an hour, when the new school year starts next August.

The Greene County Community Schools board at its April 9 meeting approved salary increases for paraeducators, custodians, media clerks, secretaries, nurses, and business staff, to bring them all to at least $15 an hour. Superintendent Brett Abbotts told the board the largest increase –  $2.50 per hour – is going to the nutrition staff.  The  increases total $120,190 for the district, comparing wages this year to next.

“With this increase we’re pretty darned competitive for all employee groups across the board,” Abbotts said.

The board also approved administrative salaries for the 2025-26 school year with a total increased cost to the district of $44,5452, or 3.208 percent.

This track and field season will be the last for the athletic tracks at Linduska Field. The board approved resurfacing the 400m track, surfacing a new concrete area between the existing long jump runways, and surfacing the new high jump area by Midwest Tennis and Track at a cost not to exceed $168,045. Funding will come from the districts physical plant and equipment levy (PPEL) and local option sales and service tax (LOSST) funds.

The new surface will be black, as adding a color would cost as much as $80,000, Abbotts said.

The district hosts two high school track & field meets each year – an Early Bird meet and the Ram Relays – as well as a middle school meet. The field is also used for practices throughout the season.

According to activities director Dave Wright, the current surface is more than 13 years old. The new surface has a life expectancy of 10 years. The board approved the purchase of a 2026 International 77-passenger bus at a cost of $151,483. Abbotts told the board delivery time for a bus is currently a full year; delivery is anticipated during July 2026. The bus will be used for regular routes. It will be equipped with seatbelts but not under-bus storage or air conditioning.

The board set a public hearing on an amendment to the 2024-25 budget for Wednesday, May 14, at 5:15 pm at the district conference room at 101 Ram Dr in Jefferson. That is the board’s regular monthly meeting time and date.
